Tamara O'Neal

Tamara O'Neal

Tamara, a willful 17-year-old Southern girl, enjoys a life of wealth and privilege in one of the finest homes in D.C. until tragic events shake her family to the core.  When her parents arrange to have her smuggled out of ConFed to safety in the West, she meets Henry, an Underground Railroad guide experienced in the Deep Southern route.  Her harrowing journey across 2,000 miles of hostile Confederate territory to freedom in New Albion forces her to dig deep for courage when everything and everyone she knows is stripped away.

(Favorite hobbies: shopping and shooting guns.)

Volume 1 of the comic More Perfect UnionTamara’s Escape” lays out the full story of Tamara’s journey.   To be published in Spring, 2018.

Chad O’Neal

Chad O’Neal

Chad O’Neal is a true son of the Confederacy.  A second-generation government official and Deputy Director of the Department of State, Chad and his family live in a sumptuous mansion in Alexandria, Virginia.  He and his wife Jocelyn dote on their daughters Beth and Tamara, who have enjoyed lives of luxury afforded only to the elite of ConFed society.

Chad grew up in Atlanta with his cousin Daniel, becoming fast boyhood friends with Evan Fernandez before the War.  Despite landing on opposite sides of the conflict, Chad and Evan have maintained contact through diplomatic back channels over the years.

When double tragedies the previous year turned his life upside down, Chad reached out to his old friend.  Together they devised a desperate plan using an Underground Railroad network stretching across 2,000 miles of hostile territory to smuggle Tamara to safety.

(Favorite hobbies: travel, diplomacy, Revolutionary War history)

Follow the story of Chad, Jocelyn and Tamara in “Tamara’s Escape” Vol. 1 of More Perfect Union coming out in Spring, 2018.

Jocelyn O’Neal

Jocelyn O’Neal

Jocelyn walks a fine line in ConFed’s patriarchy.  As the wife of Chad, a top government official, she is fully accepted into Washington D.C. high society.  But sometimes there are whispers about her “foreign” ways. Half-Persian, daughter of a pre-War female surgeon, Jocelyn witnessed her mother’s forced conversion to Christianity and subsequent restricted medical practice.  Growing up, Jocelyn learned to cloak her Persian ancestry with conformity, and so her life with her daughters Beth and Tamara and husband Chad is calm, comfortable and orderly.

Then something terrible happened and her eyes were opened to the harsh reality of life in ConFed.  Now, nothing will stop her from getting Tamara to safety in New Albion, even the threat of prison or death.

(Favorite hobbies: cooking, interior design, Middle Eastern history.)

Follow the story of Chad, Jocelyn and Tamara in “Tamara’s Escape” Vol. 1 of More Perfect Union coming out in Spring, 2018.

Henry Blackstone Underground Railroad Guide

Henry Blackstone Underground Railroad Guide

Henry Blackstone, 58, has been an Underground Railroad Guide since the end of CWII.  He and his wife Belva shelter and guide refugees from ConFed, as well as those fleeing oppression from the Republic of Tex-Mex.  Their remote ranch in the rolling hills of Oklahoma has hidden hundreds of people over the years.

One of the saddest, but most important duties Henry and Belva perform is the removal and proper burial of hundreds of young women who are executed and hung from billboards along the escape route by ConFed Border Agents.  This gruesome warning to other refugees is witnessed by Tamara first-hand during her flight across Oklahoma with Henry in Vol. 1 “Tamara’s Escape” coming in Spring, 2018.

Evan Fernandez

Evan Fernandez

Evan Fernandez grew up in Atlanta, Georgia after his father moved the family there for a high tech job in 2014.  He became close friends with Chad O’Neal and Daniel Carrigan, first cousins in his class at school.  The three boys were inseparable, despite different family politics. While Evan’s family remained staunchly liberal Mexican-Americans, Chad and Daniel’s families followed a more conservative path.  Just before war broke out, Alberto Fernandez moved the family back to Albuquerque, New Mexico. The boys were wrenched apart but swore eternal friendship.

Evan served in the New Albion military in the campaigns of 2031 and 2033, then became a career military specialist in intelligence and refugee facilitation.  He’s maintained his connection with Chad and Daniel through diplomatic back channels and is currently the Director of Refugee Extraction, informally called the Underground Railroad.  He’s also the father of Mallory and Sean and the partner of Kimberly Bassett.

(Favorite hobbies: geo caching, bow hunting, breakfast cuisine)

Read about Evan’s fierce commitment to Refugee Extraction in “Evan’s Story” currently available as a web comic on the More Perfect Union website, amoreperfectunion.co.

Mallory Fernandez

Mallory Fernandez

Mallory Fernandez, 18, is a typical New Albion femme: athletic, poised, intelligent and capable.  But there’s trouble in Paradise…despite many freedoms and accomplishments, Mallory is sick of New Albion’s “contract” system.  Her parents’ contract is about to expire and, in spite of the fact that they’ve re-upped three times, this time it looks like they won’t renew.  This is shattering news, because unlike most young people her age, she hates the fact that “love,” “commitment” and “marriage” are dirty words in New Albion.

(Favorite hobbies: hiking, climbing, guiding, watching old Hallmark Channel movies.)

In Vol. 2 of More Perfect Union, “Going Back to Go Forward,” Mallory meets and bonds with Peter and Tamara, second cousins from ConFed, taking a step toward love and the family she so deeply desires.

Kimberly Bassett

Kimberly Bassett

Kimberly Bassett knows families are a blessing and a curse.  The daughter of Susan Bassett, radical feminist and chief social architect of New Albion, relationship distrust is in Kimberly’s DNA.  She’s brilliant, beautiful and accomplished but also resents Susan’s part in the shaping of New Albion society and the pressure it brought upon her.  Kimberly suffered badly when Evan did not renew their first contract in favor of another woman, and although he came back to her and they have finished three contracts, she still distrusts Evan.  Loves him but distrusts him.

(Favorite hobbies: Camping, geo caching, landscape design)

Long-simmering tensions between Evan and Kimberly play out in Vol. 2 “Going Back to Go Forward” of More Perfect Union.

Peter Carrigan

Peter Carrigan

The product of an important ConFed family, Peter Carrigan at 17 appears to be a model citizen: excellent student, social volunteer and dutiful son.   Beneath Peter’s conservative exterior, however, lurks the soul of a budding political revolutionary, sharpened through forays into the seamier parts of Baltimore late at night.  Paired with wicked drawing skills, Peter’s comic The Courant has become a voice for the dispossessed and disenfranchised in Washington D.C.

More recently, he’s agreed to a school exchange to New Albion to support ConFed’s nascent Resistance movement, founded by his and his cousins’ parents in response to the events of the previous year.

(Favorite hobbies: drawing, sketching, running, archeology.)

Peter’s role in the events of 2052 begins in Vol. 2 of More Perfect Union “Going Back to Go Forward” coming in Fall 2018.

Sean Fernandez

Sean Fernandez

Sean Fernandez, 16, feels like a changeling in his own family.  Big, blonde, athletic, he loves sports and competitive games and atypically, is intrigued by his grandmother’s Catholic religion. Unlike his parents and sister, he’s not much interested in politics, spying or saving people, and he’s often bored and confused by conversations around the dinner table.

So, when Sean meets Tamara from ConFed in Vol. 2 “Going Back to Go Forward,” he’s instantly smitten with her energy, rebelliousness and feisty spirit.  Things don’t go smoothly for the young lovers, though, and soon Sean’s path leads him away from Tamara on a spirit quest among his father’s family in the wilds of New Mexico.

(Favorite hobbies: collecting antique trading cards from the old American football leagues, rock climbing, eating.)

Look for much more on Sean’s journey in future issues of More Perfect Union.
